Shilajit, What is it?
Shilajit is a substance which is naturally occuring and found mostly in the Himalayas. It’s formed gradually over the course of centuries through the decomposition of plants by microorganisms. It’s a potent, safe, and useful substance that has the potential to aid in finding balance, energy, and fighting off diseases. Currently being studied for its potential to help with cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s and dementia. Shilajit is made up of sixty to eighty percent fulvic acid, and also contains anti-aging elements like selenium.
What Can it Do For You?
Shilajit is most well known for the abundance of natural energy a consumer will feel. Often described as waking up ten or twenty years younger, it makes some feel as if they have found a natural balance within. This nutrient rich substance is growing in popularity and for good reason. It may help sharpen your mind, raise your energy, and help heal your body.
As it grows in popularity, you should know a few things. Unauthentic Shilajit has been found in the market. Be sure to find a trusted vendor or source. Additionally, there are many different types of shilajit, so it’s important to know which one is right for you.
The most common type is shilajit tar (as pictured below). It’s a truly potent tar-like substance that is very hard for many to swallow. This type is often gathered on a small popsicle stick, and consumed directly in the mouth with water. A less well known type, which Austin Organic Village carries, is a dried powder (third picture in this article). This type is easier to consume, because you can just fill a size 00 capsule, and you’re good to go. No need to taste that nastiness.
Shilajit can be found in mainstream stores as well as through alternative vendors. However, in big box stores, quality is uncertain and difficult to ascertain. Buying from smaller vendors who go straight to the source is always a better idea.
How Do I Consume?
According to some customers, when taking the tar-like substance, a small pea sized amount is sufficient. You’ll want to prepare yourself, because it has a very strong, unpleasant taste. If going this route, we recommend washing it down with a whole glass of water. If consuming the powder, a half teaspoon will work. We suggest packaging it in a capsule and consuming it with a whole glass of water. Always do your own research on amounts to be consumed, and discuss with your medical professional to identify any possible interactions with other medications that you may be taking.
